The history of Yiwu Market:
in the 1980s, Yiwu city was known for small traders who mainly traded sugar for chicken feathers at the time of the Qing empire. In 1949, when the Communist Party of China took the power, the capitalist activity was stopped.
In April 1982, a woman named Feng Aiqian complained to Xie Gaohua who was appointed Party Secretary of Yiwu, that why her goods are seized by county authorities and she is not allowed to work and support her poor family? After that Xie went to Wenzhou, the first Chinese city to allow private businesses and conduct research.
In September 1982, he decided to build Huqingmen Market in Yiwu. There was a guideline of “Four Permissions”, permission for farmers to enter the city and do business. This was the first time in China that a local government legalized a local market for farmers. The market had a rapid growth and in 1983 the government spent 580,000 Yuan to build a new market, at the end of the year, there were over 1000 sellers selling more than 3000 products. After that, the market continued its growth and rebuilt and expanded several times and now it is the world’s largest market.
